Stopped out at the extreme on a BTC Bid × Ask footprint chart

BTC on 15-minute bars in the 0xArchive Terminal, 2026-10-23.

Open on a chart

Load it on BTC 15m in the terminal, then change its settings or open it in the script editor.
A stacked imbalance at a bar’s high made mostly by shorts closing at a loss, stopped out or liquidated, or at its low by longs. Buying that comes from shorts giving up stops when they run out, so it often marks the end of a move rather than its start, where the same stack made by new longs would mark a start. The stack is outlined in amber and the mark past the bar’s extreme says what share of it was stopped. “Mostly” is against the market’s own habit. stop_long counts every long closed at a loss, chosen or forced, and on some markets that is a large part of all selling: 45% of HYPE’s taker selling and 34% of BTC’s, over October 20 to 23, 2026. So a stack is marked when its stopped share is at least 1.5 times the market’s usual over the last 96 bars, and at least half of the stack.

How it works

trades().onTrade sums each fill whose takerWhy is stop_short (taker buying) or stop_long (taker selling), or that liquidated its taker, by row of chart.rowSize, and the bar’s stopped and total buying and selling in tallies. ta.sma keeps the usual share. On each closed bar the stacks come from the bar’s profile rows by the footprint’s rule; one reaching the top row or the one below it is at the high.

Try changing

  • Count liquidations only, for forced exits alone.
  • Fire on the forming bar too, with alert(name, { onForming: true }), for a stop run while it happens.
